There are four different traveler categories:
Child: 4-11 years old
Child Passes are free and must be purchased together with an adult pass. The Child Pass cannot be added later. Up to two children can travel for free per adult pass. The adult does not need to be a family member but can be someone in the travel party over 18. If more than two children want to travel with one adult, a Youth Pass must be purchased for the additional children.
Youth: 12-27 years old
If you are 27 years old or younger, you can travel with a Youth Pass.
If you turn 28 before your first travel day, you must buy an Adult Pass. However, if your birthday occurs during the journey, you can buy a Youth Pass.
Adult: 28-59 years old
Adult Passes are for those between 28-59 years old.
Senior: 60+ years old
If you are 60 years old or older, you can travel with a Senior Pass. You will receive an Interrail Pass that is up to 10% cheaper than an Adult Pass.
If you turn 60 before your first travel day, you can buy a Senior Pass. However, if your birthday occurs during the journey, you should buy an Adult Pass.
Children between 0-3 years old do not need an Interrail Pass. The child can travel for free on an adult's lap. However, if you want to reserve a seat for the child, the child must have an Interrail Pass. Similarly, if you are traveling on a night train, the child must have an Interrail Pass to get a separate bed.
